When the going gets tough, the tough get going

Walking home by the pond the other afternoon, I was excited to see a second long-necked turtle, smaller than the one I have previously posted about.

When lo, the turtle I've seen previously also emerged from the murky depths.

Two turtles was too close for comfort for the black ducks. It was time to find a less cramped location.

Just how do these turtles find the pond?

  1. They have probably been there all winter - they sort of hibernate under the mud on the bottom of the pond. It is extremely cool. I don't know quite how they do it - they must have a bit of trapped air with them and they wouldn't have to breathe very much if they've slowed everything down enough...

  2. Really? I didn't know that. But how do you think they get there in the first place? Washed down from dams on the mountain? Captives released?

  3. How fabulous! Hopefully you'll have a growing turtle population to keep you, and us, entertained.

  4. After recent heavy rains kids saw little turtles on a pathway near the pond so I guess it means they are around. I'd love baby turtles in the spring!
